On Sunday, November 9, my daughter and I had lunch in the Dairy Queen, 2291 Valley Avenue in Winchester, Virginia. Hours are Monday-Thursday, 10:00 AM-10:00 PM; Friday and Saturday, 10:00 AM-10:30 PM; Sunday, 10:00 AM-10:00 PM. The phone number is (540) 662-7607; the Web page is http://www.dairyqueen.com/ and includes menus.
The restaurant had been closed since September for extensive remodeling, inside and out, and reopened on November 17. Changes included a new sign DQ CHILL & GRILL, emphasizing the food offerings and replacing the original DAIRY QUEEN BRAZIER sign. Both Dine-In and Drive-Through service are still offered.
The building's main entrance is in the center of its right side and has a vestibule. The drive-through window is on the left side, along with another door. The single room is L-shaped, with windows on the front and both sides. Immediately inside the main door you are facing a large display case with assorted ice cream cakes. To the right of this display is the check-in counter.
Along the back wall is a dispenser for ice and water, a conventional soft drink dispenser, and another for iced tea. Three high-rise tables are in this area. Seating elsewhere is by a combination of booths and tables. There is background music; a large TV screen is on the front wall, and a smaller screen is in the back corner on the left wall.
There is no paper menu; menus are displayed on the walls behind and above the check-in counter. The basic categories include $5 Buck Lunch, Combos, Grillburgers, DQ Bakes Sandwiches, Chicken Sandwiches, DQ Snack Melts, Chicken Strip Baskets, Snacks, Salads & Sides, Kid's Meals, Icy Cold Beverages, Hand-Spun Beverages, and Orange Julius. Ice cream and frozen specialties include Blizzard Treats, Hot Desserts à la mode, Classic Treats, DQ Cakes, DQ Blizzard Cakes, Cones, Sundaes, and other items.
We both ordered No. 1 Combos: Bacon Cheeseburgers with a beverage, and fries, or substitute salad or onion rings. My daughter selected onion rings with a Coke and I had fries with Dr. Pepper. We resisted ordering any of the ice cream specialties that Dairy Queen is noted for. We were given a metal plate with the number of our order, and sat down for it to be delivered to our table.
It was nice to be able to sit while waiting instead of picking up the food at the counter, and it was delivered fairly promptly. The burgers were OK, but not exceptional; my daughter liked her onions and my unsalted fries were good. Fast food is not really my forte, and I'm not likely to come back for the food; my visits will be for the ice cream specialties.
