On Monday, April 18, 2016 I had lunch at the Honey Baked Ham and Café, 25 Weems Lane, in Winchester, Virginia. Hours are Monday-Friday, 10:00 AM-5:00 PM; Saturday, 10:00 AM-3:00 PM; Sunday, closed. The telephone number is (540) 535-0060.

It is at the end of a long building at the corner of Weems Lane and South Loudoun Street, next to Mr. Noodle & Rice, and was originally opened as Heavenly Ham in 2001. It’s primarily a deli with tables for eating in.

The parking lot wraps around the building. The front entrance is at your left, and has no vestibule. Going inside reveals a single large room, with an L-shaped counter at your left and along the back wall. You place your order at the counter and pay for it. Tables around the room offer seating for eating in.

If you’re interested in sandwiches, the offerings include Specialty Sandwiches, Signature Sandwiches, and Build Your Own Sandwiches, all with calorie ratings. There are also Salads, Soups, Extras, Beverages (Fountain or Can). Menus are on the back wall, along with displays of the variety of the take-home foods available.

Takeout items for preparing meals at home include assorted Heat and Serve items such as Hams, Bacon, Entrées, Extras, and Desserts. A rack in the center of the room offers sauces, seasonings, condiments, and soup mixes, also for taking home.

The white tiles in the floor and ceiling, along with windows along the front and right wall give the place an airy ambience. A side entrance gives additional access to the parking lot, and also has no vestibule. The hours appear to cater to the lunch trade and to people picking up dinner items on the way home after work.

My choice for lunch was from the Signature Sandwich menu, and was a Ham Classic sandwich with ham, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise, and hickory honey mustard on a croissant roll. My beverage was Sprite from the fountain.

The sandwich was rated at 620 calories. It was cut in half and good, but the contents were slippery from the mayonnaise and toothpicks would have helped to stabilize it.

I have lunch here about once a week and highly recommend it. You get a lot of very high quality food for the (reasonable) price. The restaurant is clean and the staff is extremely pleasant. You will not leave hungry or unhappy with the service.

OK, this was the THIRD time I've gone to this place during normal business hours to find it closed. I give up! Who closes at 2 pm?
