My visit to the Chowhound was everything but pleasurable. The waitress did not get any orders correct. The food was mediocre at best. The cooks lack of efficiency caused for an extremely long wait. There were only 7 patrons in there and one would have thought there were 70. Would not recommend this "so-called" restaurant to anyone. — Anonymous Reviewer

By far, the most awesome food I've ever had! Homemade, definitely. Excellent and attentive service. Mary, our waitress was a blessing. The "Chef" Luke was amazing to watch. We had the distinct pleasure of ordering the Authentic Maryland Crab Cake Sandwich and seasoned fries with the delicious homemade cole slaw. We have had the pleasure of eating the Maryland Cream of Crab Soup although the Salmon Chowder was to die for today! Ample portions for our drinks! Great Value @ $6.95. Lunch and Breakfast specials are complete everyday. Best of all, we love Audra and Joe. This is our spot and we would recommend them to anyone. Great job! — Anonymous Reviewer

Chili seemed like a good idea with cooler weather on hand. It was quite good and the "bowl" size was plenty and also came with two huge pieces of cornbread. Good value, good quality, friendly service. — Anonymous Reviewer

Excellent food. If there's a short wait it's because most everything is homemade...will go again... — Anonymous Reviewer

Decided to take my girlfriend and daughter out for lunch. And waited there over an hour for a tuna melt. We had a glass of water and a bowl of soup and chili. The soup and chili both tasted good, but nobody can wait an hour for a tuna melt. They may have taken on too many items on the menu. I hope it works out for them, but our experience was awful. We got up and left. — Anonymous Reviewer

The vegetable soup and cornbread are wonderful. The sandwiches are also very good. My favorite is the BLT. — Anonymous Reviewer

On Monday, September 13, I had lunch at Chowhounds, at 6 South Loudoun Street in Winchester. This is located on the Oldtown Walking Mall, just across from the Wilkins Shoe Center.

Chowhounds serves Breakfast and Lunch all day and every day from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The phone number is (540) 662-2500, and it has delivery, carryout, and dine-in service.

Although a small place, it has sidewalk dining, as most eateries on this mall do since its recent extreme makeover; even the hamburger joint has this feature now. There are four metal round tables here with chairs and one rectangular table, surrounded by an iron fence.

Chowhounds is definitely small, and has several seating arrangements to maximize using the limited space. The door is set back a little from the building's front, and as you enter you see a narrow shelf along the left wall, with several stools for patrons who don't care to stand there.

A counter is at the rear, also with stools. A high-rise table with two chairs is in the front window for those who wish to be seen. Along the right wall are two tables for two, and a long table in the center of the room can seat six people with a little crowding.

The five-page menu has only one page devoted to Breakfast; the remaining four pages show Lunch items. These may be summarized as burgers, cheese-steaks, subs, and other sandwiches; also fried chicken, a fish filet, and hot dogs, along with chili, salads, desserts, and drinks.

I ordered a bowl of chili, which came with two-pieces of freshly-baked cornbread. I decided on lemonade for my drink, instead of my usual Dr. Pepper, to avoid the caffeine. The chili was good, in a small bowl that would not have been adequate for someone with a more robust appetite than mine. The cornbread was also good, and obviously incorporated sugar. The glass of lemonade was very large.

The tiling on the floor has bold black and white squares in a checkerboard pattern, and the walls repeat the black and white motif with wide vertical stripes. The décor is essentially utilitarian.

The restaurant opened a little more than a month ago, replacing Swirls Café and Sandwich Shop, which closed at the end of July. At one time the place was called Swirls Olde Towne Brunch, and offered ice cream and frozen yogurt, but I have no recollection of eating at either Swirls.

Today was the second day to eat at Chowhounds. Neither day was a disappointment! The food was delicious. All homemade and fresh ingredients. They use Gore meats, and I really appreciate them supporting the local economy. I found out that their chef makes an effort to cook low fat and low sodium. Yesterday I had their sloppy joes...yummy! Today was the special...steak quesadilla with pico de gallo and sour cream. They also served a cup of soup...I chose the homemade chili. And their blueberry/lemon meringue pie was to die for! Incredible food, service was fantastic, and the price was very reasonable, especially considering the large quantity of food they serve. I highly recommend Chowhounds. — Anonymous Reviewer

Good chili-serving was a little small for the price but it was good! — Anonymous Reviewer

Had lunch today at Chowhounds. The service was friendly and excellent, as was the food. Portions are VERY generous and priced very reasonably. We were asked a couple of times (but not too many) if everything was okay. Drinks were refilled promptly. They definitely deserve the "5" rating. They are a great addition to the walking mall. — Anonymous Reviewer
