Ordered pizza and a salad to go. The man who answered the phone barely spoke English. I had to repeat my order three times. When I asked him to read my order back to me, he could not. Twenty dollars for a medium 3 topping pizza and a salad! — Anonymous Reviewer

On Tuesday, March 18, 2014, I had lunch at La Pizza, a new Italian restaurant at 806 South Cameron Street in Winchester. It opens at 10:00 AM Monday-Saturday, and at 11:00 AM on Sunday. It closes at 11:00 PM Monday-Thursday and Sunday, and at 12:00 AM Friday and Saturday. The phone number is 540-722-0001, and La Pizza offers delivery in and out of town, along with pickup and dining-in service.

Other businesses previously at this location were Jack's Auto Sales, a used car business, and the Middleburg Creamery, specializing in ice cream. It is located between Pall Mall Street and Millwood Avenue and has its own limited off-street parking. It is next door to an established Pizza Hut operation.

The entry is at the left end of the building, and opens into a reception area that provides seating for patrons waiting for pickup orders, along with a cashier's desk. Seating for dining is in an adjoining room entered through a doorway in the right wall of the entry space.

Two refrigerated display cases of bottled soft drinks are along the front wall of the dining room, on your right as you enter. Beyond these are five booths next to the front windows. Another four booths are along the back wall, and a large flat screen TV is located high on the wall above the entry doorway.

La Pizza opened on February 24, and I learned about it from its menu sheet included among the advertisements in a recent issue of The Winchester Star. This was the same menu sheet used in the restaurant, and is printed in color on both sides of a glossy 8.5x11 sheet.

One side of the menu was devoted wholly to pizzas, with Pizza and White Pizza listed separately. Both kinds could be had in four different sizes: 12" BABY, 14" MED, 16" LG, and 18" XLG. You could also order by the slice, and specify a variety of additional toppings.

The flip side of the menu listed Buffalo Wings, Calzones or Strombolis, Hot Subs, Cold Subs, Wraps, Pasta and Homestyle Dinners, Steaks and Burgers, Appetizers, and Salads. I chose Eggplant Parmigiana from the dinner offerings, my usual selection to judge an Italian restaurant on my first visit.

The order came with a homemade roll that had been baked as a wedge, and a side salad with oil and vinegar dressing. The oval platter held two thin slices of eggplant, covered with melted mozzarella cheese, on a large bed of pasta. My beverage was a bottled Mr. Pibb from one of the refrigerated displays.

I would have preferred a larger platter with the eggplant and pasta separated, or even in separate dishes. As it was, the pasta masked the fact that the eggplant was a minimal serving. However, the salad was very good, and the best part of the meal.

I do not consider La Pizza anything more than a pizza place with token offerings of other Italian dishes, and do not plan to return. I do not usually choose to order pizza when I am eating out on my own. I asked for a go-box for the pasta.

There was no jukebox or background music. The front and back walls had a few small pictures of European scenes. From time to time the kitchen workers were quite noisy, not only with their pots and pans, but with shouted conversations.

I arrived a little after noon, and was the only patron dining in, although there were several people taking carryout orders. Three of the staff were having pizza for lunch as I left.
