Every year, students who are new to the Winchester area sit in their dorm rooms wondering where they can go to eat out. Even some students who have been here a while aren’t familiar with all their dining options. Now, everyone has a comprehensive source to point them in the right directions.
For a complete list of area restaurants — and their menus — students can now go to www.wincfood.com.
Wincfood lists 186 restaurants in the Winchester area, including a few in surrounding Frederick County such as Applebee’s and Outback Steakhouse. Wincfood was designed and created by Shenandoah alumnus and employee Mark Turner, database system administrator for the Development Office, and his friend Jayden Sibert.
Turner, a 2007 graduate, and Sibert, who attended Shenandoah for his freshmen year, created the site to help people who are new to the area find places to eat.
“We noticed there wasn’t a site online keeping up with the openings and closings of various restaurants in Winchester,” said Turner. “So we decided to create one.”
The site not only provides menus and phone numbers but maps of the area and a list of upcoming events.
Visitors can leave reviews of the restaurants where they’ve eaten on the site, too. All reviews are sent to the account and read by either Turner or Sibert before being placed on the site. This is to prevent people from making up stories or using inappropriate language on the site.
“I once read a review that said the person could see the cooks putting cats into a blender,” said Turner. “That kind of stuff is ridiculous and doesn’t get put on the site. But, if a review is negative and fair it will be published.”
Within the next year, Turner and Sibert want to include all restaurants in Frederick County on their site. For now though, if you’re tired of eating at the same places every week, go to the new site and find places you never knew existed in Winchester.
