St. George's Day lunch, crab cake and fish sandwiches excellent again. A pint of Boddies to wash it down, can't beat it!

My husband and I stopped into the Union Jack yesterday and had a fabulous time. Jesse, who took care of us, was great! We ordered the Poached Pear Salad to start, and it was simple and wonderful. When my dip sandwich wasn't so brilliant, I was able to send it back without a bunch of hassle. I was able to order the Bangers and Mash, and the manager and the chef both apologized without too many excuses about the dip sandwich. The beer was great, and the dessert -- I had a French Toast Cupcake with maple icing and BACON on top -- was even better. We even had French pressed coffee. Go to the Union Jack for a good time and for some good food!

Damn fine burger special today.
Bleu Cheese and Mushroom.
Always a good meal here, especially knowing that all products possible are purchased locally. The burger was top notch today.

Look forward to my next meal with you all.

My family and I were here on August 2. All I can say is "Wow" What great service. They were quite busy with one too many male server that seemed to be lost. The food was great. The buffalo chicken dip was cheesy delious although it could use a little more chicken. Over all what a great experince. So glad our server was on top of everything, I can't remember her name but it was different. We will be back soon.

WOW!!! Not enough space on here to give my review!!!!! I just moved to Winchester from Tampa, FL in November of last year. I relocated for my job. UJP was the first place I went into, and I gotta say for not knowing anybody in town they made me feel like a local right away!!! I am there anywhere from 6 to 7 days a week. I eat my dinner here almost every night, I have tried everything on the menu, and have not had one bad thing (They also have a great English breakfast on Sunday), from there Shepherds Pie to there Prime Rib, just the best....now onto there vast beer selection.....WOW, I still have not tried them all, you gotta see it, yes this place is a pub, but it is truly a great restaurant not some hole in the wall, with a young crowd looking to get drunk . . . and I saved the best for last . . . the staff . . . what a amazing job they do, very friendly, they treat everybody the same even if you just met them or you go in as much as I do, UJP has a lot of Winchester history . . . so if you want a great meal, a good drink, and friendly staff UJP for you!!!!!!

The food is just ok; kind of Ruby Tuesday-esque.

The beer selection is fabulous and it is a shame that the bar service isn't...even though we go there in the early evening.

We've kept going back because we like the atmosphere and the beer selection but we've grown incredibly tired of the rude bartenders. We've given up and no longer frequent this establishment.

After moving back to the area around 8 months ago, this establishment quickly became my favorite watering spot

First things first, the Shepard’s Pie and Fish and Chips are delicious and a meal that is a specialty here.

I also think their Chicken wings with perfectly battered skin and enough meat on the bone to make other wing type restaurant’s ashamed. Their chicken salad are the best in town, in my simple opinion, as well.

I enjoy the pub section in the back where the bartenders and servers are all very nice, greeting me as I walk in with my favorite beer already poured and ready.

The service is top shelf, the owner walks around making sure everyone is enjoying themself and everything is fine almost every time I’m there.

I enjoy myself and have a good time with great food, great beer and great people.

With all of those qualities, one can see why it has become a favorite

On business on Winchester, as a Brit I was happy to see an English pub in town. I was confused by what I found. I have certainly never been in a pub at home which resembles this. An impressive building maybe but it is nowhere near a pub inside. The beer selection was rather good but the food? Soggy batter on the "fresh" fish was truly awful. Other diners around me were equally unimpressed and I had to apologize and say real British pub food is much better than this. One couple complained but were brusquely treated by a lady I took to be the manageress. Sadly the beer list doesn't make up for bad food and service

Wow, finally a place that not only serves an impressive selection of beer, but knows how to serve it at the proper temperatures. When beer is served at brain-freeze icy temps the less carbonation is released, ergo, less aroma. Why do I want to drink good beer if I can't taste it? This place has it down. Cheerful, accomodating staff and delighful fish and chips. Perfectly cooked, greaseless fish with a nice snap to the batter and addictive fries. What's not to like? Word on the street is that they have a great burger, but will have to try that on another visit.

So disappointed! I have been to here quite a few times and it has always been hit or miss. The days it was good it was outstanding and the other times just ok. Since there was more good than bad we kept going back but after this last experience I don't think we will be back. To start it took 15 minutes for someone to take our drink order and another half hour to get our drinks. The waitress then seems to have forgot about our table because 35 minutes later we asked if we would be getting our soup. 30 seconds go by and she is running up with 3 bowls of cold soup. It seems that all the salt from our entire meal was used in two of these soups. Dinner was served promptly after the soup and it was all cold and tasteless. How is backed Mac and cheese left out so long it gets cold? We told the waitress our issues and she had the manager give us a 15% discount. You'd think If your restaurant was empty you would personally see what the problem is and try to make the best of a bad situation instead of insulting people by throwing them a meaningless discount on a $130 meal. go for drink but eat elsewhere

I would like to thank the staff here and especially the chef for making battered bangers for me on Sunday April 3rd, 2011. This brought fond memories of having battered Bangers and chips from Snuchhells in Mildenhall, Suffolk England from when I was growing up. This type of accomodation to a new customers request has made my wife and I customers for life.

Far too expensive. If the food was a bit better it would be worth it. Service is often bad. Servers are never there, do not take the order correctly, can be rude, fail to take down reservations when we call them in (as in our party arrives and there's NO table), fail to fix problems sometimes. I want it to be sooo much better, especially since my husband is English. But I think the restaurant could use something of an intervention by Gordon Ramsay - the people, the menu, finally the food.

Best casual dining/bar in Winchester!

My husband and I really love this place. They have fun, fruity cocktails for me and a ridiculous beer selection for him. The food is good (try the asparagus & blue cheese appetizers) and the servers are nice.
It's generally busy, but not crazy and the live music nights can be really fun.
It's our favorite place to go on a regular night out.

My family and I went here today for lunch. Must say we were very disappointed with service and with the food as well. It took more than 45 minutes to recieve our meals. Even then the food brought was incorrect. The fries were cold as was the mac and cheese that we ordered. We wanted refills on our drinks which took forever to get and when they did come for refills we were served what was suppose to be ice tea with no ice so it ended up being lukewarm tea. The sandwich that one of us had was terrilble and the fish and chips was not good.... Will any of us go back? ABSOLUTELY NOT.

My wife and I finally made it to UJ this past week for lunch. Great building. Fantastic beer selection! The fish and chips were the worst I've ever had. Geez, the old Author Treachers chain had better. The fish was soggy. The fries tasted and looked like they had been cooked the day prior in three week old oil. Additionally, the lunch price was the same as the dinner price...what up with that? Fifteen bucks for lunch fish and chips. On the bright side the mac & cheese was great. Also the waiter didn't even give us utensils, I had to ask for them. Will we go back?? Ummm, don't know.

I'm here at UJ writing this review (thanks to the free WiFi that is also superfast).

I just finished a "Full English" breakfast which is 2 eggs, incredible bacon, 2 slices fried tomato, some kind of beans, mushrooms and toast!! It was delicious.

Was still hungry so I had to get an order of the Hummus, which I'd had before and is awesome.

Finish it all with coffee. Not just coffee, UJ coffee. Let me tell you there is no can of Folgers anywhere near this place!! It comes in a little pouring thingy with a rod in the middle to squish...Never mind. I don't know about these Hoity Toity coffee tools, I just know that it's very good (I went for 2 cups!!)

Service is always good here. Mandy behind the bar is my fav, but the girl today was great as well. Friendly, fast and accurate!! I am never let down by this place. Richie and his gang are spot on in this great looking English style pub in the heart of Downtown Winchester.

I am moving away soon, and this will definitely be one of the many things I will miss.

We went to The Union Jack Pub and had an absolutely AMAZING lunch! We got the very last table downstairs--all of the bar-side tables were full, too.

In spite of the crowd, the service was very good and the food was simply amazing! I ordered a fish sandwich and expected the usual square, pressed fish. I was amazed when I received a lovely, flaky piece of fish, lightly breaded, and outrageously good!

I highly recommend The Union Jack for locals and/or visitors!

We and our friends were passing through Winchester on our way to Florida from upper New York. We happened to pass this establishment while touring the historic interest of downtown Winchester, and decided to grab a table on your quaint patio.

Anyway we just stopped in for drinks and to be safe we all ordered draft Bud Lights. His response was are you sure you wouldn't want to try something a little different? We offer 30 draft beers on tap.

Do to his suggestions I tried a Banana bread beer my wife got a new castle (yawn). Our friends also tried the banana bread bear and a lindamen's raspberry. Excellent choices. We also had a couple of appetizers.

I highly recommend this establishment whether your are a local or just passing through. The food was very good for a more than reasonable price (verses quality), and the beer selection AMAZING......we actually ended up staying an extra day in town because of our server and his amazing suggestions of the sites to see in your amazing little town.

You have such a gem here we wish you the best of luck and success.

I met a friend here for lunch today. I had the Shepherds Pie and it was really flavorful. The meat was very tender and the blend of seasoning was nicely proportionate to the other ingredients. The mashed potatoes had a nice bread crust on top and were nice and fluffy in the middle. For a lunch portion, it was probably perfectly sized, however I finished it wishing there was more. I would rate the quality of my food at a 4 but the service was a 2.5. I will come back again for the food and hopefully the quality of the service will improve.

Becoming a fan. A friend once told me no one goes to England for the food, so makes you wonder about English pub fare as the specialty. The menu is generally heavier foods, but some lighter things and specials mixed in.Excellent change of venue to hang out for a drink. It's great to be able to get a proper pint.

Great food! Good service, and very nice, helpful staff. My wife and I came to Winchester for the L"Angelus concert( Also great!) at the old Courthouse, and chose the Union Jack because it was just across the street. What a lucky move. For the first time in years, I had a steak cooked the way I wanted. Not raw, not a hockey puck. I can't believe how many places just can't seem to hit a happy medium with meat. If you tell them you don't want it bloody, it seems the cooks get insulted, throw it on the grill and go on vacation. My wife had the Shepard's pie, which she loved. The garlic mashed potatoes were fine, and the broccolini was excellent. I heartily recommend this place.

MENU: Dishes offered cover a cross section of favorites reflective of the diversity of British population. Fish, chicken (Indian style), bangers & mash, prime rib, etc. WE ORDERED: "Fish & Chips". I chose a side of coleslaw, husband chose mashed peas. Our meals were brought to the table and both of us ended up with coleslaw. We overlooked the mixup. FOOD: A. Beer Battered Fish, deep fried, light & crispy golden batter, fillet cooked to perfect doneness was tender white and flaky, not over or under cooked. B. Coleslaw was delicious, the best I've ever eaten. Seemed to have a hint of garlic rather than sweet cubed pickles. C. Chips were frenchfries, may have been fresh cut not frozen, tasty! COMPLAINTS: Only one - they were out of tartar sauce. Surprising, since the fish is their signature dish, it was Tuesday not a weekend, grocery stores are everywhere and only takes a few simple ingredients and is easy to make. ENVIRONMENT: Warm and inviting with lots of hardwood, nicely refurbished. 1800's era building was once a bank. Be sure to notice the intricate carving on the finial and wooden spindle at the bottom of the staircase. GO or NO GO: Definitely GO! We'll be back.

We stopped for lunch this past Weds. (May 27th).

The service was great-- We sat at in the bar area our waitress was also the bartender. She recommended a beer called Son of a Peach. She said the beer almost tastes like candy. And it did!

It was one of the most spot on description of a beer I have ever heard.

So I can't say enough good things about this place!! I went there for the first time this weekend, and I've read the other reviews and disagree!!! Every place can have an off day. Doesn't mean it's bad or staff is bad. But we loved it!!! Amazing beer at GREAT prices. We ordered off the pub menu and everything was amazing. I saw some of the dinners carried past me and my mouth watered! We ended our night with a bread pudding that was to die for. Our bartenders were great and realy helped us pick out good choices! I still can't believe all the good beers they have there! And the look of the bar was stunning! I love the copper bar top! Can't wait to go back - it's our new favorite spot in Winchester. No need to even go to other bars here!

I went here for the first time on Mothers Day and the service was excellent. I have been in this business for a while and I know that holidays can be a hassle. Every time that I have been there it seems like there are a ton of servers ; but on a holiday ..where was everyone?? I mean, over Apple Blossom they had more staff than customers. We felt a little sorry for the waitstaff but otherwise; my mom enjoyed most of her meal and I thought the server made the most of a tough situation. but who leads these people and where are they when things get tough??

This is a two part review, as I was lazy and was unable to leave one before I left on vacation. The APPLE BLOSSOM descended upon Winchester, and before I left on vacation, I wanted to go and have a pint. Despite the craziness, the Jack rose to the occasion and made my dinner just GREAT! A revised, shortened menu and some great beers on tap. JUST what I needed. A good filling dinner and a variety of good beer, IN THE MIDDLE OF APPLE BLOSSOM! my favorite restaurant did not skip a beat in SERVICE, in FOOD, and in ATMOSPHERE! Part II, Return from vacation, I needed a good meal since our fridge was bare!. Our service was a bit slow as our server was a bit frazzled, but Ana and Brittany, not to mention the rest of the FRONT OF THE HOUSE staff were really Haulin' butt to make customers happy and served in a timely manner. I will say this though, I think the waitstaff need a "summer" uniform, as the "TIE and BUTTON DOWN" looks a bit "stuffy" and "uncomfortable" for Summer...Richard, make your staff happy and comfy for the summer...how about some polo shirts? perhaps some Guinness T's? Brewery T's of various available beers on tap? Just a thought....happy staff makes for good service! ONCE again, a great, albeit slow meal...(probably not a big deal since we were still on "beach" time)! Fantastic Curry Chicken, and YES, I HAD to have my fish and chips with MUSHY peas..why mess with perfection? Again, great work guys, keep up the great work! Your LOCALS love the "local pub for a pint".. Kevin

Great fish and chips, atmosphere is nice but small. Major complaint was the service which was not good. We waited for an hour after ordering for our food to come out, and nobody said anything at all until after our meal was over. They came out and told us our drinks were on them. I mean really....two of us had water and one had a soda. How ridiculous. Hopefully they get better service there soon.

This is a beautiful restaurant. They really put a lot of effort into restoring the building, you can tell. Growing up with British parents I was very eager to try the food at the Union Jack. I was very dissapointed in the Yorkshire Pudding I have to say. It was too dense and not light and airy as it should be. The Prawns with Aioli were also dissapointing. Too few Prawns for the price and way too many chips. The bartenders are very pleasant but their pours are not what I would expect for the price. I ordered wine but the rest of my group ordered mixed drinks. They were all put off at the quality of their beverages. Not enough liquor in any of them. I have been back a few times to have drinks with friends and I always hear the same complaint about their mixed beverages. Overall I will go back to eat again but I will go elsewhere if I am taking friends or clients out for drinks.

***Excellent authentic British Food**** Something for everyone. I am pleased to say that I have been regularly eating at the Union Jack since it has opened some months back. The food is absolutely SPOT ON! Being a Brit, I have brought my whole family here when they are in town visiting and they agree. The Fish is a proper piece of Cod, with crunchy batter that is a bit soft on the inside (perfect). The Chips (french fries) are cooked just right, a bit soggy in the middle, and guess what? I even asked for my chips to be a bit on the soggy side, and they made them to order! The Mushy peas (a british delicacy) are just right. Not too dry, not too mushy. Basically folks, take the idea of mashed potatoes and apply it to peas. Try it, I'm sure you will like it. If not, that's okay, more for me! Finish the Fish and Chips off with HP (thick A1) sauce and proper Malt Vinegar, and you have found yourself the closest thing to Fish and Chips in the home country of England! Bangers are the real deal, nice savoury sausages that are not too greasy, full of nice mild meat, and the mash is the right consistency, Bisto gravy right on! The Shepherd's Pie has a nice sized portion, the same fab mash on top with a nice meaty bottom, well seasoned, not too salty. It has been literally ages since I have had Scotch Eggs (eggs wrapped in sausage and breaded/fried), wow, they hit the spot. Lastly, the Chef has outdone himself with the Bread Pudding. You know, in other restaurants, it is some gelatinous mess of buttery sauce and sweet stuff. NOT SO at the Jack. Proper firm bread pudding with chocolate chips and other goodies lurking inside, served warm and finished with a ladel of Bird's custard. WOW. My wife and I cannot leave without having it. Pure perfection! I could go on and on about the menu, it is just authentic British food. Now we Brits are not well known for our culinary delights, but for good well portioned, well seasoned, tasty food at a great value, Union Jack has hit the mark. Their Pub atmosphere is welcoming. Yes, on weekends it can be busy, but here's a newsflash **YOU ARE AT A PUB ON A WEEKEND!**, it is going to be busy. If a bit of quiet is what you are after, they have another two floors for seating and dining away from the hum of the pub area. The beer selection is extravagant. Some great names. Old Speckled Hen on tap! What's better than that?. Walkers Crisps (potato chips) straight from the homeland! Just try the different flavors, you will see. The service at the Union Jack is attentive, friendly and keen to please. As with any new restaurant, there are times when the kitchen will get overwhelmed, customer volume slows attentiveness, however, I am stunned by the fact that since the first try of their establishment, including my meal last night, I have never ONCE waited to eat, waited for a drink, or thought ill of their waitstaff. I am a hard customer to please as my family has been in the restaurant business for some time, and Anna, Bernie, Heather, Michael just to name a few have always been on their game. I don't know how they do it. Perhaps I cut them some slack because the food is so good and I am in a fish and chip coma, but I have always had fantastic service. Now, I am not going to say that I have not read or heard of substandard service at the Jack. In fact, I had a friend who had a concern with a visit once, and I made mention of it to Richard, the owner. He asked me for his phone number, took the time to personally give him a call, and asked him to come back and give it another try, comping him his food. Now what owner goes to that extent I ask you? The Union Jack owner, Chef and Staff, in short is committed to making their Pub and restaurant a mainstay of Winchester dining. I am so glad that an owner with PASSION and a staff that CARES to put out a great product is here in Winchester. Just ask me, I'll be the guy with the Old Speckled Hen and Fish and Chips with Mushy Peas. Cheers and Hats off To the Union Jack for finally getting an authentic British Pub in Winchester! K

Union Jack is not getting any better with age!! I sat in the bar area with servers walking all around me (not a lot of people there either) and after 15 minutes, I finally stopped one of them and asked if she could get me a beer. My wife joined me and after another 15 minutes with no one even noticing she didn't have a drink, she walked out. Needless to say, I did too. Too bad the service here is so bad....the building is really beautiful but that won't bring me back again.

Having heard so much about The Union Jack, we went there for lunch yesterday. Wow! The renovation of the building is really great--the bar area and the downstairs dining room look great, the balcony room is very nice, and the top floor (puff-puff up-the-stairs) looks nice for darts, etc. The food was OK; the staff was friendly; the service was good. One of us had the pastrami and the other had the grilled chicken. The pastrami was tender and very good. The grilled chicken had lots of grill-burn on it. We'll probably go back sometime for dinner--but not order anything off of the grill.

Husband was happy with the beer selection but since I don't drink beer I ordered a mixed drink. They had no idea how to mix it - although it was a common drink - fortunately my daughter who is a bartender was there and told them how to mix it - essentially it is wine and a liquor mixed. They charged us for both the wine and the shot - making that one expensive drink. The appetizers were very small and very expensive - not enough for even one. We would go back for my husband to have a beer but not sure we would eat there again.

The food is ok. I had the burger and it was a premade pattie and it tasted old....not to mentioned it was ice cold. Service wasn't very good.....slow...and she didn't give us utensils or napkins or anything....even after setting our food down, we had to ask for a fork. I like the building. Hopefully they will improve the food and service soon. I would like to go back but not anytime soon.

This place is so awesome. The beer and wine list is huge. The beers are from all over the world and everything is a good price. The place itself is beautiful with three stories. The food is really good, my fave so far are the fish and chips. This place has class. It feels like a classy DC bar, without the ridiculous prices. Union Jack's is working out a few kinks, but it is improving, and I bet it will be here for along time. Check it out!

We read about this place and drove here from Herndon to try it out. The building is beautiful and very well done. Food is just OK. They were out of a lot of things and our food was cold when it finally came out and it was just plopped on the plate without any presentation at all. I ordered a cocktail and it was mostly soda and they didn't have much to choose from for wine. They are still pretty new so maybe things will improve with time. I think it's worth a second shot but not until they get some of their problems worked out. We will probably come back.

Having a few growing pains but a great pub. Prices are right, 24 draft beers plus a lot in bottles. Nice staff, great location. I went on a Saturday night and the place was packed. At time food was slow coming out, but this was only their sixth day of operation. All in all had a great time.

I went to the Union Jack on their opening night. I sat in the bar area. I wanted to be adventurous and give all of their beers a try. My waitress brought me a different beer each time, I never had to ask or try to flag her down. Of the beers that I tried, I liked the Union Jack Ale the best. I still have a lot more to try so I'm sure I'll find another favorite before I give them all a try. I didn't come close to trying all of the beers that they have on tap. I also got a bite to eat. I've never been to the UK and don't know what an authentic British meal is, but my meal was great. I ordered the fish and chips with mushy peas and it was awesome. I definately plan on going back soon.

It truly was an authentic British meal. The fish and chips were great and I have never seen such a large beer selection. The service was a little slow but that was expected since it was packed with people. I will definately return.
